Surface Piercings – Yes or No?

Surface piercings are any body piercings that take place on the surface into the body through areas which are not particularly concave or convex which is a surface flap of skin, rather than through a piece of body tissue from one side to another. A surface bar follows the plane of skin, while a standard piercing is pierced through the plane.

Sometimes surface piercings are difficult to heal, due to the daily activities that takes place, and which the body rejects the jewelry as a foreign object. Collar bone piercing is an surface piercing, also often referred to as a Madison. The name comes from the first well-known person to wear this piercing – adult film starlet, Madison Stone. It’s positioned right above the sternum. Madison piercing has a very high rejection rate, due to the body’s natural movements. No matter how much you take care of the piercing, very few of them ever heal completely. A Madison is done horizontally by using a small curved barbell, surface bar, CBR, or a circular barbell. However, anything but a surface bar that is used on the piercing has a greater chance at rejection. Healing time for an Madison piercing can take months, or it may never heal at all. Even Madison Stone herself lost the piercing many years ago, and hasn’t bothered to have it pierced again.

Not too many people are big fans of hand web piercings, but there are some people that think they are unique and attractive. This piercing is not commonly performed by reputable professionals because of its low success rate. This piercing has a high rate of rejection because of the nature of the tissue and how dynamic or mobile the area is, and how hands can lead up to a lot of bacteria and germs. The hand web piercing is typically a temporary piercing, but if you want to reduce your rejection risks, you want to make sure that the jewelry is placed in an area of the webbing that will reduce movement. You should also be careful of moving the surrounding fingers, as you may notice by moving the other fingers, you can irritate the exit holes of the web piercing on that hand.
